When water is heated, it expands. In an open plumbing system (older homes without a PRV), the expanded water can push back into the city main — no problem. In a closed system (any home with a PRV or backflow preventer), that expanded water has nowhere to go. Pressure builds until it trips the T&P relief valve on your water heater, potentially flooding the area around the water heater. Over time, repeated pressure cycling stresses every component in the system.

Texas plumbing code requires an expansion tank on all closed plumbing systems. An expansion tank is a small pressurized vessel — typically mounted near the water heater — that absorbs the expanded water volume without raising system pressure.
